Para-xylene
Describe
Para-xylene is a derivative of benzene and an important chemical raw material. The molecular formula for paraxylene is C8H10 or C6H4(CH3)2. Its name can be abbreviated as “PX”, in which the English letter “P” is the abbreviation of “para”, which means “para”. Para-xylene is one of the isomers of xylene, and the other isomers include ortho-xylene and meta-xylene.
Colorless transparent liquid, with aromatic odor, low toxicity compound. The specific gravity is 0.861g·cm, the melting point is 13.263℃, and the boiling point is 138.37℃. Flammable and is a hazardous chemical. Its vapor and air form an explosive mixture with an explosion limit of 1.1% to 7.0% (volume). The solubility in water at room temperature is 162 mg·L. Soluble in alcohol (ethanol), ether, acetone and other organic solvents.
Irritating to skin and eyes; May have central nervous system effects; Aspiration hazard from ingestion (may cause chemical pneumonitis); Based on animal studies, may adversely affect human reproduction or development; [ICSC] If spilled and Left on clothing, may cause skin irritation and redness; high vapor concentrations may cause mild irritation to eyes and respiratory system; may cause liver and kidney damage; [CHRIS] local irritant; inhalation of high concentrations may cause narcotic effects, Severe cough and pulmonary edema; ingestion may cause kidney and liver damage; [NTP] irritating to skin; harmful by inhalation and skin absorption; may cause anesthesia, lung irritation, chest pain, pulmonary edema, central nervous system depression, blood disorders , liver and kidney damage, and reproductive disorders; [Sigma-Aldrich MSDS] See “Xylene isomers”.
