A sign at the entrance to the building that said: “No Skaters Admitted” was a joke from my first year of college. I was taking a class called “Introduction to Mathematics.” The professor had told us we needed to learn math to be good scientists. I learned it from a book that said: “Learn math and you’ll be well on your way to understanding what science is really about.”
My company just installed a digital display board in the lobby. The board is a monitor that can display static text and images, and can be moved and rotated. Using our computer software, we designed the board to give a message whenever someone enters the front door.
When the team came back, there was a digital sign with two words on it. The first was the name of the project, and the second was a link to the website.
The first version of this board was a bit crude. I had no idea how to use the software, so I just made a board with a picture of an eye on it. When I showed it to my husband, he thought it was so ugly, he tore it off the wall.

The next project was to try and make it look more appealing. I found a company that did video board design, and I gave them the specs for the board. I asked them to make something that was appealing, but also easy to read under different conditions (rain, snow, etc.).
As a scientist, I study the environment. I observe what happens in nature and try to understand why it happens. I like studying how things work and how they work together.
